Marks & Spencer broke sales records over the festive period, with total group sales up 5.6% to £4bn during the third quarter.

During the 13 weeks to 28 December, the brand reported 8.9% growth in like for like sales for food, alongside a 1.9% like-for-like growth across clothing, home and beauty – laddering up to 6.4% growth within the UK and Ireland business. International sales were down 2.8% due to “continued challenging market conditions in India and the phasing of franchise shipments”.

In a call with media today (9 January), chief executive Stuart Machin said M&S is “out to break records” after generating “record breaking” Christmas sales.
