The Week in Tech: Copyright battles and a revamped Sandisk

Marketing Week’s weekly round-up of the technology stories that impact the marketing sector: from AI to martech, regulation to public perceptions.

The government launched a consultation yesterday (17 December) with the creative industries and artificial intelligence companies around the use of copyrighted material in the training of generative AI models. The government is hoping to offer greater clarity on what has become a contentious issue.

The consultation proposes an exception in copyright law for AI training for “commercial purposes”, unless the copyright holder actively opts out of letting their works be used in this way.

The government believes this will lead to greater transparency in how content is used and allow individual license holders to negotiate deals more effectively, while not stifling the burgeoning AI development community in the UK.
