Disney looks to strengthen ‘resonance and engagement’ in holiday short by Taika Waititi

Disney says it wanted to “create something new” this Christmas, so is moving away from the story of Lola, which it has told since 2021, instead opting for a short film about a boy befriending an octopus.

Disney is leaning on its original storytelling to inspire “joy and wonder” this festive season with the release of its Christmas holiday short in collaboration with filmmaker Taika Waititi.

Created in conjunction with global creative agency Adam&eveDDB, ‘The Boy & The Octopus’ follows the journey of a child who discovers a curious octopus has attached to his head during a seaside vacation.

“The holiday short looks to strengthen the resonance and engagement that Disney has with families across EMEA and the UK ahead of the new year,” Nicole Morse, vice-president of brand and franchise marketing at The Walt Disney Company EMEA tells Marketing Week.
